Proposal for a Sculpture Installation
“TEDDY’S SECRET SAFARI”

Randall Nelson, Willington, CT

“Teddy’s Secret Safari” is a sculptural installation, to be done as an enclosed space, approximately 14’x 14’. This is an installation composed of separate but related components that tell a semi-fictional narrative based on the life of my great- grandfather, Robert Hiram Griffin. It chronicles his experiences going on an Arctic hunting expedition with the great Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. It also deals with the political and social ramifications of their actions, both during the expedition and afterwards.

This installation depicts my great- grandfather’s “secret trophy room”, but it was not a place of pride; it was actually created as an act of atonement, for he felt great guilt over the part he had played in the betrayal of Mr. Roosevelt.
